    {

      "answer": "No. Accent variation within one language is a recognition-quality problem that belongs in the offline replay set, where the evaluating-voice-agents reference lists accents deliberately, while a different language changes which speech models, prompts and phrasing the agent must use."
    },
    {
      "question": "What should a voice agent do when it does not support the caller's language?",
      "answer": "The voice agent should say so briefly in plain, simple words and hand the call to a person, since the cost of a wrong guess is a caller who cannot be understood. This is the author's inference, because the corpus documents no language-specific handoff procedure."

    {
      "question": "Does dubbing software help a live multilingual voice agent?",
      "answer": "No. Dubbing and subtitling is an offline batch pipeline, and the ai-dubbing-localization-and-subtitling reference states that live-agent concerns like barge-in and streaming latency do not apply there, so its methods do not carry over to live callers."

  ],
  "body": "A voice agent handles a caller who speaks another language in three steps: it works out the language, runs speech components that cover it, and passes the call to a person when it cannot. This is the last article in the [voice AI agent in production](/articles/voice-ai-agent-in-production) cluster, and its evidence is thinner than the others, so every claim is labelled.\n\nLabels: \"corpus\" means a named reference says it; \"inference\" means the author's own reasoning; \"not documented\" means the corpus is silent. The vendor facts in the corpus were last verified on 2026-07-09 and carried forward unchanged, not re-confirmed, in the voice-realtime-agents reference's 2026-09-28 pass.\n\n## What does the corpus actually say about multilingual callers?\n\nThe corpus says three narrow things: one vendor offers automatic language detection, vendors state language counts, and accent variation belongs in the replay set. According to the voice-realtime-agents reference, the xAI Grok Voice Agent API offers \"100+ language support with automatic detection\" (corpus, vendor's own statement). It records ElevenLabs Eleven v3 at \"70+ languages\" and Cartesia Sonic-3.5 at \"42 languages\" for synthesis (corpus, vendor-stated).\n\nThose figures are not comparable: they measure different things at different stages, and none is a quality measure for any one language. The reference says nothing about mid-call switching, mixed-language speech or per-language accuracy.\n\n## How can a voice agent detect the caller's language?\n\nA voice agent can detect language in three ways, none documented beyond the single vendor claim above, so treat this list as inference:\n\n| Approach | How it works | Risk |\n|---|---|---|\n| Vendor automatic detection | The realtime API identifies the language itself (corpus: xAI Grok Voice Agent API) | You inherit the vendor's behaviour on short or noisy openings |\n| Ask the caller | The greeting offers a language choice, or asks which language they prefer | Costs a turn and presumes the caller can understand the question |\n| Route before the agent | The number dialled or the page the caller came from implies a language | Wrong for callers who use a number meant for another language |\n\nThese combine. A sensible order, as inference, is a routing default, a detection signal that can override it, and a spoken confirmation when the two disagree.\n\n## What happens when the agent detects the wrong language?\n\nA voice agent that detects the wrong language should ask a short clarifying question in the most likely language and hand off when that fails, as the author's inference. A wrong detection is costly because the reply arrives in a language the caller did not choose, and the caller may not understand the apology either.\n\nKeep the recovery path simple (inference):\n\n1. Confirm the language in two or three plain words rather than a full sentence.\n2. Allow one correction, then stop guessing.\n3. After the correction fails, transfer using the mechanics in [voice agent human handoff](/articles/voice-agent-human-handoff).\n\nNothing here is a corpus standard. How a given vendor behaves on a caller who switches language mid-sentence or mixes two languages is not documented in the corpus, and each case is worth recording as its own test clip.\n\n## Do speech-to-text and text-to-speech need to be chosen per language?\n\nSpeech components need a per-language check, because the corpus shows language coverage differing by component, though how much depends on the architecture. In a cascaded stack the voice-realtime-agents reference lists separate transcription and synthesis vendors and states language counts only for some synthesis options, so coverage has to be checked stage by stage (corpus for the counts, inference for the consequence).\n\nWith a native speech-to-speech model there is one component to check, but the corpus gives no per-language comparison between the two architectures. The operability differences between them are in [what to log and filter by architecture](/articles/voice-agent-architecture-cascaded-vs-speech-to-speech). Two checks are worth doing before launch, both inference:\n\n- Listen to synthesized replies in each language you will accept, with names, numbers and the vocabulary of your domain.\n- Confirm that the language your detection returns is a language every downstream component supports.\n\n## How should evaluation be sliced by language?\n\nEvaluation should be sliced by language so that each supported language has its own replay results, because an average across languages hides the weakest one. That slicing is inference. The corpus part is narrower: the evaluating-voice-agents reference says offline replay should include deliberately hard calls, listing accents, background noise and crosstalk, and that replay gates a release while online monitoring catches what it misses (corpus).\n\nAn accent is not a language. Accent and noise variation within one language belong in that replay set; a second language needs its own set with its own pass signal (inference). The metric definitions, such as word error rate, are in [evaluating voice agents](/resources/evaluating-voice-agents), and the reference gives no per-language thresholds. Write yours down before you look at results, as the [voice agent launch checklist](/articles/voice-agent-launch-checklist) advises for every gate.\n\nOther pieces to slice by language, all as inference:\n\n- **Turn-taking:** whether the end-of-turn and barge-in behaviour tested in [how to test turn detection and barge-in](/articles/voice-turn-detection-and-barge-in-testing) holds for the pacing and pauses of each language.\n- **Latency:** whether the stage timings in the [voice agent latency budget](/articles/voice-agent-latency-budget) hold per language.\n- **Handoff:** whether the person who receives the call speaks the caller's language.\n\n## What should the agent do when it does not support the caller's language?\n\nAn agent facing an unsupported language should say so in one short, simple sentence and transfer to a person or an alternative channel, as the author's inference. The alternative, answering badly in a language the agent handles poorly, converts an unsupported language into an apparent system failure.\n\nPlan three things in advance (inference):\n\n- A spoken refusal that does not rely on the unsupported language being understood perfectly, ideally in the language the agent detected.\n- A handoff queue matched to the language; the corpus documents no language-matched routing, so check what your platform can do.\n- A log field recording the detected language and the reason for transfer, so unsupported demand becomes visible. The [voice agent online monitoring plan](/articles/voice-agent-online-monitoring) covers where such a field belongs.\n\nIf the unsupported language is common in your traffic, that is a product decision about adding it, not a handoff problem.\n\n## What does the corpus not tell you about multilingual voice agents?\n\nThe corpus does not tell you how well any vendor performs in any specific language, so a language count is a starting question, not an answer. Specifically, as of October 2026, the following are not documented:\n\n- accuracy, latency or voice quality per language, for any vendor or architecture;\n- mid-call language switching and code-switching behaviour;\n- whether spoken-output guardrails, covered in [guardrails for spoken output](/articles/guardrails-for-spoken-output-in-voice-agents), and personal-data detection work in non-English speech, which is worth testing before launch (inference);\n- per-language cost, though the method in [voice agent cost per minute](/articles/voice-agent-cost-per-minute) can be repeated per language from pilot usage (inference);\n- legal or regulatory duties to serve callers in particular languages.\n\nVendor facts here are carried forward from a 2026-07-09 check and were not re-confirmed in the voice-realtime-agents reference's 2026-09-28 pass, so re-read current vendor documentation before relying on a language list.\n\n## Is dubbing the same problem as a multilingual voice agent?\n\nNo: dubbing and subtitling is an offline batch pipeline, while a multilingual voice agent is a live conversation with latency, interruption and handoff constraints. For the offline case read [AI dubbing, localization and subtitling](/resources/ai-dubbing-localization-and-subtitling), which this article does not duplicate. For the live case, the architecture and component choices are in [voice and realtime agents](/resources/voice-realtime-agents).\n\n## What does ChangeGamer know first-hand about multilingual voice?\n\nNothing: as of October 2026 ChangeGamer runs no voice agent and holds no multilingual caller data, so no result here is measured. What it can verify from its own repository is the habit this article recommends, a fixed threshold enforced by a machine. Its CI workflow runs `node ../scripts/aeo-audit.mjs --since 2026-08-14 --min 85`, and the build enforces the cluster invariants that gate this article, including a pillar link in both directions. Apply the same discipline per language: one written threshold for each, checked before the go decision.",
